Sod Care Instructions

WARNING!!!

Your new sod requires a great deal of water in the first couple of days and will die if not properly watered.

Watering

New sod should be watered as soon as possible after being installed. It should be thoroughly soaked at all times so the sod is wet, but also the dirt below it is soaked. The sod should be soaked for the first couple of weeks. After the first couple of weeks the sod needs to be thoroughly soaked every other day for another couple of weeks. After that the sod can be watered as a normal lawn would be watered.

It is Critical that new sod be watered immediately after installation!!!!!!!

After your lawn is established, Bluegrass sod requires 1 inch of water per week. Lawns watered too frequently tend to develop shallow root systems which may make them more susceptible to grub damage and heat/drought stress. Water infrequently and thoroughly.

Mowing

After the sod is installed, wait about 10 days to do your first mowing. Let the lawn dry out so you avoid making tracks especially in drainage areas. DO NOT MAKE TRACKS IN SWALES ! Set the mower to the highest setting so you don't cut off too much at once, lower the mower to the desired height (2-2 ½ “ in spring and fall 3-4” in summer) and mow again 2-3 days later. Never cut off more than 1/3 of the blade length at any one mowing.

Fertilizer

After installation of your lawn, we recommend your lawn be put on a regular fertilization schedule. Bluegrass is recommended to be fertilized on approximately April 15, May 31, July 4, August 31 and October 31. When using fertilizers, pre-emergents, or any other chemicals always follow the label directions. Begin your fertilization program 30 days after installation of your new lawn.
